- Paste the recipe URL and click Import
- Review the imported fields and click Save
Mealie supports hundreds of recipe sites. If a site is unsupported, it falls
back to AI extraction (see below).
Take a photo of a recipe card, cookbook page, or handwritten note and Mealie's
AI will transcribe it.
- Click + → Create Recipe
- Open the recipe editor and look for the Scraper or image upload option
- Upload your photo — AI extracts the title, ingredients, and steps
- Review and save
Requires the Image Provider to be configured in Group Settings (see AI
Features below).
Paste a YouTube or video URL and Mealie will transcribe the audio and convert
it into a structured recipe.
- Click + → Import from URL
- Paste a YouTube link
- Mealie transcribes the audio and parses the recipe
Requires the Audio Provider to be configured in Group Settings.
- Click + → Create Recipe
- Fill in the title, description, ingredients, and instructions
- Add a cover image, cook time, servings, and any tags or categories
- Click Save
Mealie has three organizational layers you can use together:
- Categories — broad groupings (Breakfast, Dinner, Dessert, Italian, etc.)
- Tags — freeform labels (quick, vegetarian, family-favorite, etc.)
- Cookbooks — saved filtered views, like a smart folder. A cookbook shows
all recipes matching a set of categories and/or tags.
To assign categories or tags, open a recipe → click Edit → fill in the
Categories and Tags fields.
To create a cookbook:
- Go to Cookbooks in the left sidebar
- Click Create Cookbook
- Give it a name and select which categories/tags to include
- Save — the cookbook acts as a live filtered library
The meal planner gives you a calendar view to schedule recipes across breakfast,
lunch, dinner, and snack slots.
- Go to Meal Planner in the left sidebar
- Click any empty slot for a day/meal type
- Search for a recipe or click Random to let Mealie pick one based on your
filters
- Click Add
Planner rules let Mealie make smarter random suggestions — for example, only
suggest breakfast-tagged recipes for the breakfast slot.
- Go to Group Settings → Meal Planner
- Click Add Rule
- Choose the meal type (breakfast, lunch, etc.) and the tags/categories to
pull from
Shopping lists pull directly from your recipes so you don't have to copy
ingredients manually.
- Open the Meal Planner
- Click Add to Shopping List (or similar — the button appears in the
planner toolbar)
- Choose which days to include and which list to add to
- Mealie aggregates all ingredients and consolidates duplicates
- Go to Shopping Lists in the left sidebar
- Click New List
- Type items in manually, or click Add Recipe to pull in a recipe's
ingredients
- Tap an item to check it off
- Items are grouped by label (produce, dairy, pantry, etc.) — assign labels
to foods in Group Settings → Foods to keep the list organized
- Checked items move to the bottom; uncheck all with one button when you're
ready to shop again
Mealie uses AI for ingredient parsing, recipe extraction from images/video, and
smarter scraping from unsupported sites. AI is configured per-group.
- Go to Group Settings (profile icon → Group Settings or
/group)
- Click AI Provider Settings
- Click Create Provider and fill in:
- Name: LiteLLM (or anything)
- API Key: your LiteLLM master key
- Base URL:
http://litellm.lab-ai-ns.svc.cluster.local:4000
- Save, then set:
- Default Provider → your provider, model
gemini-3-flash-preview
- Image Provider → your provider, model
gemini-3-pro-image
- Audio Provider → leave blank (no transcription model configured)
Mealie is a web app — open cook.bvoy.dev in your
mobile browser. The interface is fully responsive.
For an app-like experience with a home screen icon:
iOS (Safari): Tap the Share icon → Add to Home Screen → Add
Android (Chrome): Tap the three-dot menu → Add to Home Screen
The shopping list view works especially well on mobile when you're in the
kitchen or at the store.
- Scale servings: Open any recipe and use the servings adjuster — ingredient
quantities scale automatically.
- Duplicate a recipe: Useful for creating variations (e.g. a vegetarian
version of a dish).
- Recipe timeline: The meal planner keeps a history so you can see what you
cooked in past weeks.
- Bulk import: You can import from Tandoor, Nextcloud Cookbooks, Paprika,
and others via Settings → Migration.
- API access: Mealie has a full REST API documented at
cook.bvoy.dev/docs — useful for automations.
