Headscale is the self-hosted VPN coordinator. It uses the Tailscale protocol —
you install the standard Tailscale app on your device, but point it at the
homelab instead of Tailscale's servers.
Once connected, your device gets a stable 100.x.x.x IP address and can reach
all services from anywhere, as if you were on the local network.
When do you need this? Most homelab services are accessible directly at
*.bvoy.devfrom anywhere on the internet. You only need the VPN for services
not exposed publicly, for accessing local network resources (NAS, printers,
etc.), or to take advantage of the perks below.
The homelab runs AdGuard Home as a DNS server, blocking ads, trackers, and
malicious domains network-wide. When you're connected to Headscale, your DNS
traffic routes through AdGuard automatically — think of it as a digital condom
for your internet traffic. Ads and trackers get blocked, but your actual
browsing speed is unaffected since it's DNS-level filtering with no traffic
inspection or throttling.
This is opt-in — it only applies when you're actively connected to the VPN.
Connect when you want the protection, disconnect when you don't need it.
LocalSend lets you send files between devices on the
same local network — no internet, no cloud. Once you're connected to Headscale,
all your VPN-connected devices appear as if they're on the same local network,
so LocalSend works across devices even when you're not physically on the same
WiFi.
Install LocalSend on both devices, connect both to the VPN, and they'll discover
each other automatically.
The official Tailscale app supports custom control servers.
Download Tailscale from the
App Store (works on both
iPhone and Mac).
Because Tailscale doesn't show a "custom server" option in the standard UI, you
